What you should know about the Working of Transformer?

Are you aware of the power transformer? A transformer would be best described as an electrical device specifically designed for transferring the alternating current or the voltage, from one electric circuit to another with the use of electromagnetic induction. It could be specifically designed for:

  • Stepping up the voltage, and
  • Steeping down voltage

Due to the transformer having no moving parts or the unit remaining static under usual operating conditions, you would have a lasting and trouble-free life. The simplest type of transformer would comprise of two or more coils of insulated wire that would be wound on a laminated steel core. When the voltage would be introduced to one coil, also known as the primary coil, it would magnetize the iron core.

The voltage would be introduced to the other coil or the secondary coil or output. The change of voltage between the primary and secondary coil would be dependent on the turning ratio of the two available coils. The transformers would not be limited to one output coil only. They could provide a complete range of voltage sources ranging from one input coil by using different windings on the secondary side. It would help you make the transformer highly useful in supplying the systems with all their voltage needs from a single source.

What determines the amount of electricity produced by the transformer?

It would be pertinent to mention here that the number of times a coil would be wound around the core of the transformer would determine the amount of electricity being produced by the transformer. Therefore, if the input coil has additional loops and the output coil offers a couple of loops, the input coil would have a higher voltage, as compared to the output coil.

In case, the coils have equal loops, their input and output would be determined equal. In event of the output having more voltage, it would be called a step-up transformer. On the other hand, the input coil having more voltage would be deemed to be a step-down transformer.

The transformers could come equipped in a wide range of sizes. However, all would be operating with similar basic principles along with several kinds of similarities in their specific parts.

Choosing the right transformer

In case, you were wondering about choosing the right transformer, you should consider the following aspects:

  • Determining the primary frequency and voltage.
  • Determining the requirement of the secondary voltage.
  • Determining the capacity requisite for volt-amperes.

The Surplec would calculate it by multiplying the load current or the amperes with the load voltage for a single phase.
